2008 Year End PeeWee Report

We had a record number of kids in Pee Wee this year - 83 ! Great to see baseball in Vernon on the rise. The large increase presented a number of challenges, especially because many registrations came in late. It is so important for planning to have a good idea of numbers a good deal prior to start up. I encourage all of you to register early and I hope the new board will implement an earlier cut off on registrations. First of all, there was a lack of head coaches which resulted in large teams.

Second of all, because of our numbers, our summer ball team would be required to play in the triple A tier, which we have never played in before. We decided to put together a double A regular season team which would play in an interlock with other Okanagan teams in order for our kids to get experience at a more competitive level. This team had many first year players and was a growing experience for the kids. Unfortunately we were unable to field a summer team after all. Teams at this level require qualified coaches and are a huge time commitment for coaches, parents and kids. I believe that this year was a building year and that next year we will be more prepared to put together strong spring and summer ball teams. After two years as Pee Wee director, I am stepping down. I have learned a lot about baseball and have met many great people. Thank you to all of the coaches and parents who have helped me in Pee Wee.

Pee Wee Division - Location: Creekside Park

This will be my second year as Pee Wee Director. After a steep learning curve last season, I'm hoping to improve on a number of things this year. With a record number of kids in Pee Wee and in the other divisions, there was a bit of confusion with regards to team placement, coaches and uniforms. Getting your registration in sooner rather than later, really helps us to get organized for the season.

I would like to have coaches lined up a little earlier and get the season going a bit sooner this year. Anyone who is interested in coaching, please contact me as soon as possible. The idea of fielding a "traveling team" is something I would like to discuss this year - this would be a competitive team that would require an extra commitment from parents and players. These kids would still play on house teams but would have extra practices with a separate coach and would travel to tournaments. This would provide for a nice transition into summer ball.

I would like every team to have a manager this year. This person would act as a liason between myself and the coach as well as team players and parents. If you are interested in this position, please indicate on the registration form or contact me.I found communicating by email to be effective and will continue to do so this year - please include this in your registration.

You can contact me with any suggestions or questions. I look forward to another great ball season.
Yours truly
Gina Alveberg

PEE WEE: Lead offs are permitted and balks may be called against the pitcher in the Pee Wee division. A pitcher may pitch in a maximum of 7 innings in a calendar day and 10 innings in a calendar week. Shoes with metal cleats are not permitted in this division. The base paths are 70 feet and the distance between the pitching rubber and home plate is 48 feet. The recommended dimensions for the outfield fence are 225 to 250 feet. The pitching mound is raised by a gradual slope to a height of 6 inches above the level of the base paths. A regulation game is 7 innings and Rule 14 applies for early termination. Other guidelines for play in the Pee Wee Division are found in Rule 21.

PEE WEE UPDATE
Pee wee is running a bit behind where we would like to be at this time. Because of our high registration numbers this year, we are going to participate in the AA league along with Kelowna, Rutland and other communities.
We will be holding AA tryouts on Sunday at Creekside Park. Time to be determined.
We cannot create our schedule until we have determined the AA status, but should have it available the week of April 14. Thank you for your patience and support in helping us with this tricky situation.
